Nicola L.

Nicola L is a legendary contemporary artist. Her practice, which combines performance, feminist theory, and pop, has been shown internationally since the 1960s. A restless explorer of both physical and social material, Nicola L left an indelible mark on contemporary art when she passed away in December 2018.

She studied at L’Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts. Since her first performance in 1967, her work has been shown worldwide. In 1975, Harald Szeeman included two works by Nicola L in his exhibition, JE/NOUS, in Belgium. Other significant exhibitions include shows at Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain, Nice; Centre Pompidou, Paris; SculptureCenter, New York. Recent exhibitions include Hauser & Wirth, Tate Modern, Arsenal Contemporary, and the 2012 Havana Biennial. Her work is in the collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; FRAC Bretagne, Rennes; MAMCO, Geneva; Art & Design Atomium Museum, Brussels; and M HKA Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, among other institutions.
