Nina Johnson-Milewski opened her gallery in 2007 to promote emerging (or totally unknown) artists, many of whom went on to establish global reputations. Diet was also the first Miami gallery to exhibit at Design Miami in 2014. It represents locals such as abstract artist Bhakti Baxter, conceptualist Charley Friedman and furniture designer and sculptor Emmett Moore whose steel and glass ‘Zither Table’ calls to mind Noguchi and Rietveld. A prominent Wynwood figure, Johnson-Milewski also publishes the Miami Rail newspaper, and hosts talks, performances and happenings with artist Husband Dan Milewski. He ‘explains’ his work as an attempt to ‘highlight and reposition both quotidian activities and more apparent symbolic ruptures’.
